1) Air Cadets If you're between the ages of 12 and 18, consider joining one of Edmonton's Air Cadet Squadrons. Not only will you learn the ins and outs of flying, but you'll have an opportunity to play in a band, take karate lessons, and participate in a number of different team sports. The best part is, it won't cost your parents a dime. Friendships are forged that will last a lifetime, and Cadet participation of any kind looks fantastic on a resume later. For more information, visit their website or call 1-780-454-5434. 2) Young Eagles In over 90 countries around the world, thousands of children between the ages of 8 and 17 have taken their first flight through this program, courtesy of a volunteer pilot. Students learn about pre-inspections, airplane components, instrument panel gauges, and more. Of course, the highlight is the flight itself. To get your name on the list, call 1-877-806-8902 (toll free) and they'll hook you up with a local pilot. 3) Vacation Air Camps Why go to a regular summer camp (yawn) when you can go flying instead? The Alberta Aviation Museum hosts 4-day camps all through the summer for kids 11 and up. Take part in ground school, and then take to the skies. 4) Northern Alberta Institute of Technology This post-secondary school offers a variety of courses to get your career off the ground at the Aviation Training Centre: Introduction to Flying ; Avionics Engineering Technology ; Aircraft Skin & Structure Repair 5) Centennial Flight Centre Whether you just want your private licence or you want to fly for a living, Centennial will guide you through, step by step, and show you how it's done.
